Major earthquake hits Haiti. Help needed now
Haiti Post-earthquake Recovery Program: On the Road to a Better Life
After the terrible tragedy in Haiti with a devastating 7.0 major earthquake that hit the capital city of Port-au-Prince on January 12, 2010, killing close to 200,000 people, wounding 250.000 and leaving million of families homeless, we finally decided to implement a recovery and development project in partnership with Fonkoze. Fonkoze, a grassroot organization founded in 1994 in Haiti, is at its core, a micro-finance institution (43 branches) with a mission "to build the economic foundations of democracy in Haiti". It serves 200,000 families (credit and savings), especially poor women and is implementing a "stairway out of poverty" program by adding education and training of the ultra poor, micro-insurance, health access, cholera campaign to address all aspects of women needs. One objective is to get them out of extreme poverty to be gradually eligible to micro-credit and solidarity group lending, while at the same time sending children to school to prepare the future.
Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, close to the US Southeast Coast, in the Caribbean. It has a history of instability, violence and until recently dictatorship. Frequent natural disasters are periodically devastating Haiti, especially hurricanes and flooding, a major earthquake as never seen in the region for about 250 years, but predictable, and recently a cholera epidemics. The majority of the country population of 9 million live on less than $2 a day, out of which 3 million live in the devastated capital city area. Many schools, homes, hospitals, government buildings, hotels, orphanages, businesses collapsed killing or trapping those inside. Official foreign assistance to rebuild is slow to come and people currently count on the direct help of non-profits and family members of the Haitian Diaspora in the USA, Canada and France, and prayers, to get back on their feet.
In Haiti, working in partnership with Fonkoze, Mary Mother of Peace-Medjugorje Charity will participate in their CLM program --Chemen Lavi Mayo, i.e. "on the Road to a Better Life" by assisting with the education of children. A first funding to the program was made in December 2010 for US$3,500 as a start. Each dollar is going a long way in Haiti and will help towards seeing 200 CLM children enrolled in school. A reliable monitoring system and a strong local presence allow to properly control the use of funds disbursed locally through a special account managed by Fonkoze CLM Youth Fund. We are now gearing up to raise additional funding for the program. Budget is US$ 20,000 for two-years (2011-2012) for about 1,000 target beneficiaries.

1. God-parenthood recovery program. It is never too late for many families who are still struggling to recover from total loss after natural disasters. With time, talents, money and prayers, there are many ways for example you can still help families who survived the fall 2005 hurricanes (Katrina, Rita) and flooding disasters in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and in Texas so that more people can be back home, able to work again, and that children can g o to school regularly. Mary Mother of Peace-Medjugorje Charity has a God-parenthood recovery program that can contribute to rebuilding the life of a few suffering families by sponsoring their children. A model contract is available. Program covers of course the needs of well-identified families falling victims of new calamities and tragedies.
2. Sponsors, both individual/family and corporate can participate:
- Individual/family godparents can choose to give $600 bi-annually
- Corporate sponsors can give as they wish from $2,400 once a year to support more than one family
A mark-up of 5% only will help pay the reasonable amount of expenses incurred in managing the program. Mary Mother of Peace-MC is known for its strong financial discipline and donations are fully tax deductible.
3. Help Now. Whatever the Charity you wish to support to come to the rescue of our fellow citizens, you can also make smaller donations to MMP-MC --always a blessing!-- to help cover specific basic needs of displaced families, volunteer time to organize a fund raising event to the benefit of the victims, talk to your employers for matching grants, and ask your Church or school to have a special collection made. Victims of disasters need our compassion to get back on their feet, regain dignity, and put hope, faith and love in the first place in their life. The important thing is not how much you accomplish, but how much love you put in your deeds every day. Thank you.
