Major earthquake hits Haiti. Help needed now
Haiti Earthquake Recovery Children Program
With the terrible tragedy now in Haiti after a devastating 7.0 major earthquake hit the capital city of Port-au-Prince on January 12, 2010, killing close to at least 120,000 people, wounding 250,000 and leaving million of families homeless, we are currently launching a program to help 200 children (some are orphans) and their families rebuild their lives. Project includes (a) assisting a damaged school in Lamardelle located on a hill top above Port-au-Prince and (b) participating in the rebuilding of a destroyed clinic which was taking care of handicapped people and orphans.
Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, close to the US Southeast Coast, in the Caribbean. It has a history of instability, violence and until recently dictatorship. Frequent natural disasters are periodically devastating Haiti, especially hurricanes and flooding. This time a major earthquake as never seen in the region for about 250 years, but predictable, has created chaos and immense human suffering. Haitians are courageous, they pray, keep hope, hang on the best they can, are grateful to international solidarity coming to their rescue, especially the US and France where many Haitians live, and pledge to rebuild and go on with their lives. The majority of the country population of 9 million live on less than $2 a day, out of which 3 million live in the devastated capital city area. Many schools, homes, hospitals, government buildings, hotels, orphanages, businesses, churches collapsed killing or trapping those inside.
In Haiti we plan to work in partnership with a reliable local non-profit volunteer organization, Healing Hands/Child Jesus Foundation that we know, and with whom we worked in the past . Their local volunteers survived the ordeal, but their clinic collapsed, and the school they support is badly damaged. Children/orphans have their classes in poor condition outside as a precaution and they lack food, school supplies and most basic needs. A component aiming at improving the catastrophic living conditions prevailing around the capital area of Haiti will be included in the project by targeting 100 beneficiary families to start with. Initial program budget is $100,000 for two-years (2010-2011).

1. God-parenthood recovery program. It is never too late for many families who are still struggling to recover from total loss after natural disasters. With time, talents, money and prayers, there are many ways for example you can still help families who survived the fall 2005 hurricanes (Katrina, Rita) and flooding disasters in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and in Texas so that more people can be back home, able to work again, and that children can g o to school regularly. Mary Mother of Peace-Medjugorje Charity has a God-parenthood recovery program that can contribute to rebuilding the life of a few suffering families by sponsoring their children. A model contract is available. Program covers of course the needs of well-identified families falling victims of new calamities and tragedies.
2. Sponsors, both individual/family and corporate can participate:
- Individual/family godparents can choose to give $600 bi-annually
- Corporate sponsors can give as they wish from $2,400 once a year to support more than one family
A mark-up of 5% only will help pay the reasonable amount of expenses incurred in managing the program. Mary Mother of Peace-MC is known for its strong financial discipline and donations are fully tax deductible.
3. Help Now. Whatever the Charity you wish to support to come to the rescue of our fellow citizens, you can also make smaller donations to MMP-MC --always a blessing!-- to help cover specific basic needs of displaced families, volunteer time to organize a fund raising event to the benefit of the victims, talk to your employers for matching grants, and ask your Church or school to have a special collection made. Victims of disasters need our compassion to get back on their feet, regain dignity, and put hope, faith and love in the first place in their life. The important thing is not how much you accomplish, but how much love you put in your deeds every day. Thank you.
